The Pandemic Landscape: Honoring Our Experience of Loss

Facilitated by Neil Beresin, M.Ed.

The pandemic has had a profound impact, and many of us are left carrying the weight and compression of unexamined loss. Some of you may have experienced overwhelming heartache: on the tailwinds of a relationship ending, the death of someone dear, coping with a serious illness or injury, loss of a job, or another kind of life-altering struggle. How do we tend to our experience without being overwhelmed by it? How do we help each other in the midst or aftermath of heartache and vulnerability created by loss?

The goal of this participatory program is to open up a conversation about losses experienced during the pandemic year, both big and small. All of us have the capacity to be a source of comfort and resourcefulness to each of us. When we are able to witness without trying to fix or take away the person’s pain, we initiate a sacred process of reclamation and renewal, a movement towards healing.

Stories, poems, conversation, silence, and reverent listening will be used as a way to cultivate a safe, reflective, and peaceful space. This is an opportunity to honor each other's respective experiences, and begin to build a community of caring and restoration.

Neil Beresin is a counselor and interfaith chaplain specializing in grief and loss.

Introduction to Racial Literacy

presented by Dr. Howard Stevenson, founder of The Lion’s Story

Increase your racial literacy--the ability to read, recast and resolve racial stress and become better observers in both personal & professional racial encounters. Dr. Howard Stevenson believes that if we hope to heal the racial tensions that threaten to tear the fabric of society apart, we're going to need the skills to openly express ourselves in racially stressful situations.

In this inspiring talk, attendees will learn about how this approach to decoding racial threat can help individuals and staff at our member organizations build confidence and stand up for themselves in productive ways.

You will be introduced to strategies for Racial Encounter Awareness and Stress Appraisal.

Outcomes include:

  • Introduction to practice of reading and recasting racially stressful encounters.

  • Introduction and explanation of a racial stress reduction mindfulness strategy, during personal & professional stressful racial/diversity encounters.

  • Identify how racial stress affects thoughts, emotions and physical response during racially stressful encounters & experiences.

  • Beginning understanding of how exploring experiences affirming agency & authorship during racially stressful encounters builds individual confidence.

Dr. Howard Stevens is founder of The Lion’s Story. His 2017 TED Talk, How to Resolve Racially Stressful Situations, has more than two million views.
